How to disable the keyboard toolbar on ipad OS?

I have a bluetooth keyboard, and the software keyboard automatically minimises (which is great).

However, I automatically get a ‘keyboard toolbar’ at the bottom of my screen. It has ‘undo’, ‘redo’, ‘paste’, and an arrow on the right hand side. It is the single most frustrating UI element - because it invariably covers textboxes and typing prompts at the bottom of the screen.

I know I can push the arrow to ‘hide’ it, but it keeps on popping back up.

How do I disable it fully?
