Why doesn’t apple just add more ram?

Just curious about this. I know iOS runs fine on a lower amount of ram but smartphones are fast approaching the realm of not needing to be constantly upgraded and it would be nice if apple could just slap a few extra ram modules to their phones for people who want to keep them for longer. Does it really cost that much extra?
