Considering "Qard al-Hassan"

A Lebanese non-profit financial institution that provides interest-free loans based on the Islamic concept of Qard al-Hassan (benevolent lending). Founded in the 1980s. The institution primarily offers small loans to individuals for personal, medical, educational, or business needs, with repayment in installments.

In 2007 it has been subject to sanctions by the U.S. due to its links to Hezbollah. Despite this, AQAH maintained operations and continued to serve its clients.

During Lebanon's financial crisis, in 2019, traditional banks imposed strict capital controls, limiting depositors access to their funds. In contrast, Al-Qard Al-Hassan Association continued offering cash withdrawals, loans, and financial services, making it a unique alternative.

In October 2024, Israeli airstrikes targeted several AQAH branches, citing the institution's alleged role in financing Hezbollah's military activities. These events have added complexity to AQAH's operations but have not been linked to any actions of AQAH misappropriating depositor funds during the Lebanese financial crisis.
