My friend had someone breaking into her apartment while she is sleeping and watching her. Police say they don’t have enough to get a warrant. What can we do?
So my friend. A single mom. Rents an apt in Wisconsin. Last month she came home and noticed a hole drilled over her bed, in her ceiling - she noticed the dust from the drill hole on her bed. She, of course, is freaked out and called and let her landlord know that someone was in her apt and did that (the hole didn’t go all the way thru to the apt above, likely made with the intention of putting a camera there )
She asks the landlord for key logs. Key logs being the timestamps of when people enter and exit he apt. Her apt has an electronic fab that is able to document all these things. The landlord calls her back and says that it was only her key showing up on the log. My friend asks when the time stamps were, knowing that those key/fabs can be cloned. The landlord tells her the door was unlocked from the inside at 6am and locked from the outside at 6am. (The time she was leaving for work)…. Then it was unlocked from the inside first and then locked again from the outside at 7:30am…. When she is at work. This information alone tells that someone was in her apt when she was.
Once she told the landlord this, the landlord stopped communicating with her. Since the logs were told to her verbally she couldn’t show the cops what transpired outside of her telling them the story verbally.
Landlord will not provide the key logs nor the camera footage. We also found out the maintenance person was fired the month before for breaking into another girls apt. This same person would aggressively hit on my friend anytime he ran into her.
My friend then moved out of the apt while the lease is still active because she didn’t feel safe. She moved in with her mom. The day after moving in with her mom, her moms car and garage was broken into and nothing stolen (we fear he is tracking her and possibly left more trackers when he broke in)
Back to the police. She’s been steady updating them about all that transpired. The police say they don’t have enough for a warrant for the cameras and key logs and that trespassing is only illegal if the person has ill intent.
She is stuck… what can she do? Does this seem enough to get warrants?
