Help me chose my next laptop, Linux only
Hello everyone,
I hope you are all safe.
I'd like to replace my aging Macbook Pro 15" mid-2012 (9,1).
It has an Ivy Bridge i7 quad core, and I replaced the HDD with a 256Gb SSD a few years ago.
It still runs quite well, and for a few months, I've been running a Manjaro VM to see if I can fully switch to Linux, and I guess I'm ready.
I don't want to buy a new Macbook for a few reasons, mainly the price and the fact that I don't really like where they're going with the hardware (I really don't like the keyboard for instance).
I'm a software developer, so I sometimes compile stuff and run multiple containers/VM's.
What I want is a laptop that can run Manjaro (KDE) well, is not too expensive, that is sturdy, that can last me a few years without too much issues.
I'll probably buy a dock, to use a keyboard, mouse and external monitor(s). So probably Thunderbolt or USB-C (I heard about avoiding display link) ?
I read lots of people had issues with sleep/suspend, I'm not sure what the status is regarding these issues and the last kernels.
Also, I live in Europe, so maybe price and models available will vary.
Initial questions and doubts
- I saw a lot of discussions about dGPU, are they still relevant ?
For instance, the XPS comes with an Nvidia card, is it problematic ? Can it be disabled completely to avoid power drain, and is the laptop still performant in that situation ? - Like I said, I'd like to use my laptop as a laptop, so I'm a bit afraid about the suspend/sleep issues. I guess it mainly depends on the model ?
Contenders
After a lot of research, here is what I came up with for now, and I'd like your opinion.
XPS 15 (7590, 2019)
Seems rather well supported: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dell_XPS_15_7590
But I found some thread regarding issues with suspend: https://www.dell.com/community/Linux-General/Dell-XPS-15-7590-suspend-not-working-in-Linux/td-p/7364471/page/2
Apparently, the only one available with Ubuntu preinstalled in my country is a XPS 13.
I would like to get the XPS 15 for the screen size though.
I suppose I can get the Windows one and install Linux.
If I go for minimum 16Go of RAM, I have basically four models available: They all have: - Intel® Core™ i7-9750H 9th gen (12 Mb cache, up to 4,5 GHz, 6 cores) - Intel UHD Graphics 630 I guess ? - NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1650, 4 Gb GDDR5 - 16 Gb RAM, 2 x 8 Go, DDR4 2 666 MHz (32 Gb for the most expensive one)
The less expensive one has: - SSD M.2 PCIe NVMe 512 Gb - FHD 15,6" IPS, HS LED, HD Infinity, antiglare
Second less expensive: - SSD M.2 PCIe NVMe 512 Gb - UHD 15,6" IPS, OLED, HD Infinity
3rd less expensive: - SSD M.2 PCIE 40 1 Tb - UHD 15,6" IPS, OLED, HD Infinity
Most expensive: - SSD M.2 PCIE 40 1 Tb - UHD 15,6" IPS, OLED, HD Infinity
I don't need a 1Tb SSD, so I think it'll be between the two less expensive ones.
Should I get the IPS HS LED or the IPS OLED one ?
XPS 15 (9500, 2020)
Seems also well supported: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dell_XPS_15 It's of course more expensive, apparently the design is better, but I'm not sure it's really a huge improvement over the XPS 15 7590.
ThinkPad T590
A lot of people swear by Thinkpads, and I have to say I find them attractive.
Well supported also: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lenovo_ThinkPad_T590
Has a 15" screen, compared to the other ThinkPad's 14". Does it really make a difference ?
But I saw a lot of issues about throttling.
Has anyone here any experience with it ?
ThinkPad T490 or T490s
Also seem to be well supported, also afraid about throttling.
I was a bit concerned after reading this comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/ManjaroLinux/comments/fxa4so/help_me_decide_which_thinkpad_with_manjaro/fmu1gjw/
ThinkPad T495 or T495s
Also seem to be well supported, also afraid about throttling. They have an AMD Ryzen, apparently it's the new craze ? :)
Thank you already for your help !
EDIT: Thank you all for your suggestions.
I add the following laptops to my list:
System76 (Lemur Pro?)
Linux compatibility is obviously top notch.
My only concern is that I'm in Europe, so I'm not sure about support here.
Razer (Blade Stealth)
I'll check it out
Dell Precisions
Seems well supported and configurable.
Tuxedo
I have to check
Schenker
I have to check
