Why do some boomer women say “it’s a statement” in an angry way regarding your long hair?

I asked my relative what I should do with my hair several years ago and she said I should cut shoulder etc. I think my face was being dragged down but my hair was also not cared for (depressed, bare minimum care or less) and I was in a toxic job not getting enough sleep. I asked her what she thought of boob length (it was to my waist) and she said extremely assertively “too long. It’s a statement at that point”. Yeah, a statement about what? I like my thick hair and want to show it off, this is how I prefer to look? I can do whatever I want. And when I cut it to bob last year and this year it was to impress her who thinks it’s “more professional”. I’m grown years old and regret doing so because it takes so many years to grow back but I’m taking better care of myself now. I felt it was more of a “statement” to get short hair and the statement was “I don’t care about my own opinions and am desperate to please and conform to boomer preferences”

Please weigh in if you understand why some think it’s a “statement”.
