Deficit over time

Is there any scientific evidence regarding calorie deficit over time?

For example, as opposed to focusing on a deficit each day, is it as effective to track your deficit over three days at a time, or over a week?

Obviously, what you do each day rolls up to what you do each three day block or each week, but I wonder psychologically, if it might feel less oppressive. And I wonder if there is any impact on effectiveness.

Is this just a lot of words to ask how many cheat days one may have and still lose? Maybe. lol
