Tips For A Noob?

Hello all. I always wanted to get into the Metal Gear games, and I recently got the Master Collection and am currently trying to play through Metal Gear Solid. Here’s the thing though, I am getting absolutely destroyed.

Do you guys have any tips for a complete noob to the series? I tried playing the OG Metal Gear first, but kept getting smoked even worse, so I figured I’d just skip that one and Metal Gear 2 and go straight to MGS. Still can’t even get past the first level though, I’m so frustrated. I’ve listened to Campbell tell me about the cargo elevator like legitimately at least 50 times in a row now ._.
