First time, wanting to play

What is the best way to get into MTG? I figured I wanted to go commander due to the variety a deck can bring.

I have tried other TCGs but the community always was weird about teaching new people. Would showing up to a Friday night Magic or a commander event as a new player be weird? Or should I find someone who will teach me first.
