For me it would be Miss Saigon.

GI in Vietnam during the war falls in love with a bar girl, but they get separated during the evacuation when the US pulls out. He searches for her for a year but cannot find her, A couple of years after that he marries another American in the US. Meanwhile the bar girl (unknown to him) has had his child. Finally they come together, She realises he won't leave his wife, so she kills herself so that he will 'have to' take their son back to America, where he'll get a better life than the one she could give him in Vietnam. She is 20 when she dies.
