Would you choose a name that has a common nickname you don’t like?

In a few weeks we’ll be welcoming home our baby boy.

I had been looking for a name that accomplishes a few things: has a nod to Italian heritage (we’re both predominantly Italian but third generation here in the US), goes with my husbands last name which is not Italian, is classic, is not super common. Latin roots appeal to me. I landed on Vincent (with a nickname Vince) and I keep coming back to the name.

I like its Latin/ Roman roots and the translation of the name. It feels strong and versatile - I could see a Vincent being a CEO, a creative type, a doctor (hey a mom can dream right?)

The only issue is that we live in the northeast and Vinny will almost certainly be his nickname. I think of My Cousin Vinny and tons of other Italian American “goomba” type affiliations. My family along with any other Italian American family I know has at least a few Vinny’s, Tonys, Frankies - you get the idea. I say none of this with any negative connotation of Italians (obviously given my background and family, I’m nearly 100%). I just don’t want his name to overly define him in a specific direction is that makes sense.

Any thoughts? Am I overthinking this?
