Lambert Castle on Garret Mountain plans to re-open later this year

Lambert Castle, arguably Passaic County’s most familiar landmark outside of the Great Falls, is visible to thousands of motorists traveling on I-80 each day. But since 2020, it’s been closed to the public, due to a large-scale restoration that was slowed by the coronavirus pandemic and is now in its sixth year.

So far, Passaic County has spent about $13.5 million on the project, with about $8.5 million of the funding provided through grants, county spokeswoman Lindsay Reed said.

The castle and its carriage house have been fully restored and made accessible for people with disabilities. But there’s still work to do on the 70-foot-high observation tower that offers panoramic views atop Garret Mountain.
