I sent this letter to Councillor Riley Brockington regarding Trump Ave. I encourage you all to write to him as well.

Dear Councillor Brockington,

I am writing to express my strong belief that Trump Avenue should be renamed.

Trump has repeatedly undermined democratic norms and practices in his own country, aligned himself with authoritarian leaders, and unjustly targeted our country with a trade war that will undoubtedly have painful economic repercussions. It is deeply concerning that in our nation's capital, we have a street bearing his name.

Your recent comments in a CTV News article, where you expressed reluctance to support renaming the street due to concerns about potential U.S. retaliation, are perplexing. The notion that the President of the United States would be made aware of, let alone respond to, the renaming of a small street in Ottawa is utterly absurd.

While I understand that residents of Trump Avenue have not yet voted decisively in favour of this change, I firmly believe it is the right thing to do. As an elected official, your role is not merely to echo the opinions of your constituents but to lead with your own judgement and conscience. Regardless of the 2021 vote, which ended in a tie, you have a responsibility to stand for what is right. Renaming Trump Avenue is clearly the right decision, and I urge you to demonstrate leadership on this matter by advocating for this change.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing your response.
