Biking question

Going to be moving to Arcadia shortly. Have a couple of hobbies that will bring me to Pasadena frequently. Id like to get a bike and bike my way there to save on gas but I can’t tell if it is considered safe/good idea or not. I come from NYC area and have heard a lot about how our concept of distance and commuting doesn’t hold up over there. Anyways, let me know! Thank you strangers-soon friends
