Advice on getting that first position as a patent agent?

Hi all,

I'm 2 yrs post -PhD and realized that working in the lab environment just isn't for me. I've taken coursework in patents back in undergrad, and am currently self-studying for the patent bar. My background is biochemistry/biophysics/protein engineering/plant sciences but I am also somewhat experienced in bio-devices and electronics, specifically solar cell tech.

Does anyone have any tips for helping land that first position as a patent agent? Is it critical to have your USPTO reg number first? Are firms just slowing down hiring? I've been applying with no bites for interviews, and am not sure what to do.
