How to classify my activity for AMCAS???
Hi all! I am wondering how to classify one of my volunteer experiences. I volunteer with an organization as a rape victim's advocate. This means that I once a month, I take a 24 hour shift, during which I man a hotline and offer support, respond to any questions, direct to resources, etc. as well as accompany any rape victims in the county to the hospital for their sexual assault examinations. This is the majority of what I do as a volunteer, but I also am sometimes involved in lobbying, raising awareness, fundraising, etc. for the organization. I.e. I will man booths at events raising awareness for us. The organization also keeps track of current bills that could affect sexual assault victims in my state and I will often email representatives (not from an official position, just as a citizen) to voice concerns and help legislation be passed that will actually help victims.
I'm unsure of what the best way to classify this activity is to convey the right idea on AMCAS. I think it fits well into the new social justice/advocacy category. I am working with a lot of women and many in the LGBTQ+ community individually, as well as advocating for change at higher levels. If I classify it as volunteering instead, I still don't know whether to classify it as clinical volunteering or non-clinical volunteering. On the one hand, the most meaningful time I spend helping this organization is in ER rooms in the various hospitals around our county—so it is very much clinical. On the other hand, not everything that I do is clinical and I don't want it to seem like I'm lying if I have spent XXX amount of time total on the hotline, waiting for calls, and doing other events, and only 10-20% of that total time was actually spent in hospitals. I just have other non-clinical volunteering experiences, so if I could classify it as social justice/advocacy or clinical volunteering, I think it would be better.
Let me know what you think and thanks in advance!!
