Product Manager to Technical Program Manager

I’m looking for some insights from y’all. I started my career in project, moved to product, and am now considering going to be a TPM at a start up I consulted for last year.

I have become progressively more technical over my tenure as a product manager, moving to a Senior role on technical products within my organizations. I’ve come to find that I enjoy working more with engineers to define technical requirements and solve those problems than figuring out what to do. Years ago, I thought the opposite but was also in a vastly different vertical than tech.

My question to you all is: what does career progression look like for TPM and do you see the role as critical for organizations?

I’ve read conflicting things that program management is a dying role, just a meeting note handler, no real value, etc. but this is coming from people on Blind so do with that as you will.
