Widespread substance use seems inherently bad and totally necessary at the same time. Help me make sense of this.

Sure, it's probably not great that huge swaths of the citizenry need to drink or smoke every fucking day to get by. This includes the darling substances of the left like cannabis, which is considered 'fun' and 'cool'... although recent studies show that up to 50% of cannabis users in legalized areas use daily. Daily. That's not recreational. That's "stoned as a way of existing in the world." So. What the fuck is going on with people? Why do tremendous amounts of people seem to require substance use -- ten cigarettes a day, a morning bong hit, a shower beer -- to tolerate the weight of daily existence? The only answer I can come up with is some Psychology Today brainrot like "childhood trauma" and we all know that's 🚬 shit. So what's the deal, why do humans need to prop up their daily experience with various chemicals in order to tolerate being alive?
