Should I kill my sequal or continue?

Background

I'm about a third of the way through writing a sequel to a book I published last year (I've been delayed largely due to ill health).

Even taking out the 'kind' reviews from pubby and whatnot it has a solid rating.

But my conversion rates from advertising have been far too low. To the point where I'd need to triple them at least to break even.

I got a professional cover made, professional editing etc and am an experienced marketer. While I may have made many mistakes. For the sake of this assume the issue is that the book does not sit well within either UF or Mystery genres.

I have about 4K left in my account for books.

Should I

Continue with the sequel

  • Try and do it as cheaply as I can (say 1.2K?). There are always reasons for not finishing a book and it will be better in the long run to follow up on the sequel hook from the first novel (the novel has a resolution, so its not a cliffhanger, more a minor loose end). Better to have one duology in your back pocket than just one novel. I can also probably get it written in the next 3 months if lucky.

Kill it and move on
My next series will be pure science fiction. so at least has a clear genre! It may be more fun to write and easier to establish some sort of audience in. It's also silly to throw good money after bad.
