Why does Steampunk appear to transition into Dieselpunk at around World War 1?

like at around the WW1 period, although machines are mostly still steam powered, they've shed away the Victorian and Clockwork decorations and ornaments and become more and more functional and utilitarian as in Dieselpunk while internal combustion vehicles begin to appear on the battlefield.
