Can we stop gatekeeping fanaticism?

Recently I saw thisbpin on pinterest that was like "When they say they're an Arctic Monkeys fan but they only know [insert Arctic Monkeys' top 8 most famous songs]" and it pmo because like so what? who cares? how does it affect you if they do or dont call themselves a fan? I also saw a comment on r/arcticmonkeys (this happens with other fandoms I swear its just a coincidence that these are the most recent ones I saw😭) like earlier today on a arctic monkeys iceberg diagram thing that was like "help I've never heard [the song at the bottom of the iceberg] am I a fake fan?😭" and I just dont like the idea of a "fake fan" being a concept that exists yk? A "fake fan" should be someone who pretends to enjoy a certain thing when they dont actually, not someone who doesnt have a 20+ year old band's entire discography memorised. This is especially discouraging to new fans who have just recently joined whatever fandom it is they joined, because it can make them feel excluded or like they're somehow lying abt being a real fan.

Let people enjoy what they enjoy.

Let people call themselves whatever they want to.

You dont have to meet a certain level of knowledge about a certain subject to be considered a fan.

Stop gatekeeping fandoms.

Thank you for coming to my ted talk🦐
