Did Gandalf being a Maia of fire help him in fighting the balrog?

Tolkien said in his Istari essay in Unfinished Tales that Gandalf was a Maia of fire of kindling, warmth, etc… set against Sauron, fire of destruction.

I don’t believe Tolkien ever stated if being a fire spirit helped Gandalf in his fight with the balrog - but speculating - is there any reason to believe it might have helped?
