Keeping costs down self drive Botswana, Namibia, South Africa

Hello,

I am trying to plan a 3 week self drive camping holiday in southern Africa probably for June 2025 for my wife, myself and an 8 year old.

Ideally I want to have some time in the Okavango (dream for my wife) but I am open to suggestions that can help keep the budget in order. From what I have seen it would be best to fly into either Johannesburg or Windhoek, as rentals (such as Bushlore) seem to be cheaper or avoid delivery fees to Botswana. I have been looking at 4x4 campers particularly the luxury (despite the extra cost) as they allow the three of us to sleep in the same zone as opposed to two rooftop tents. It would be nice to stay occasionally at a cheap lodge (suggestions) as I am sure a pool swim would be welcome every now and then ;)

Aside from ideally getting to the Okavango, I would possibly look at getting to : Chobe Nxai Pans/Makgadikgadi pans Etosha Namib-Naukluft National Park ( would be nice but maybe pushing it for time distance) Kruger

What advice or tips do you have for keeping the budget down in terms of: Time of year Departure points Less expensive parks Camping fees etc The occasional lodge/accommodation

Many thanks for your ideas and experience!
