Looking to do FULL system upgrade - need some advice

I’m going to be doing a full system upgrade relatively soon. Full as in replace everything from the ground up in the system. Currently all HDDs and everything is working but I’m approaching 8 years on my parts.

My plan is to buy all components and build it myself. I need to do this now as my ability to do this in the near future will end and I want to get it taken care of now while I still can.

A few questions:

  1. What is the best way to swap my USB thumb drive?

  2. Are there any recommended thumb drives to use?

  3. What is the best way to swap the data from HHD array, parity, and SSD cache to a new system? Right now the SSDs and HDDs work but again I’m 8 years in and they simply can’t just keep going strong so it’s likely safer to phase them all out rather than toss them in the new system and deal with them failing shortly after, no?

  4. I assume I’d do the USB swap first. Then get the new system up and running with all the empty drives and then plug in some of the old drives and begin copying data. Once that’s all done, get the parity running? Is there any easier way?

Nothing on the system is earth-shattering important so I’m okay copying over data and then rebuilding the parity. Right now I’m in 4x 8TB array and 1x 8TB parity. 1x 1TB cache.

Goal is to move to 4-6x 16TB array and 2x 16TB parity. 2x 2TB cache.

I’ll deal with what hardware to actually purchase for this in a different sub, I’m more concerned on the migration part of Unraid in this thread.
