Weird experience with cab driver through Curb app--is this sketchy?
I ordered a cab through the Curb app at around 6:20pm yesterday. When the driver arrived, I got in and confirmed it was my cab. The driver then asked how I would be paying, cash or card. I said since I ordered through the Curb app, the payment was already handled. He said he no longer uses the Curb app because they no longer pay their drivers. Instead he cancelled the ride in the app and drove me to my destination on the regular cab meter as if he’s just stopped when I hailed from the street. I said that was okay but I thought it was odd.
I paid for the ride with my credit card, and got a text receipt from something called “Idika Elite Services” rather than from something that seemed like an official taxi cab. I think maybe this guy is using the Curb app to find riders, then either double charging them by making them pay on the meter in addition to in the app or just charging them once under the table with his personal square account. The whole thing seemed off to me.
I reached out to the Curb app support and their response was "looks like you cancelled, sometimes that happens accidentally. Anyway, bye." Which was annoying, because I didn't cancel, he cancelled. I was surprised that they didn't care that their drivers would be using the app to find riders but then going around the app to charge them.
I thought about filing a complaint with the Department of For Hire Vehicles, but I don't have any of his info in my ride history.
Am I overreacting? I usually love using the Curb app instead of Uber/Lyft because I like supporting DC cabs. But this whole thing was really off putting.
