How friendship works?

I tried to add a person as a friend, but I couldn't add the character, just the battlenet. So I have the questions

  1. Is this because the person was from Horde and I'm from Alliance? Or maybe different realms?
  2. After I added as bnet friend, can this person see my battlenet username?
  3. Can this person see my real name?
