Why Have the New Mutants Been Relaunched & Used Far More Than Generation-X's Cast?
I'm curious about this one. I was not personally a fan of Generation-X (they came about just as I was getting out of comics for the first time and never had any attachment to them) and LOVED the New Mutants but... I've met a LOT of people who say they're big Gen-X fans. Presumably a lot of comic writers who read them 30 years ago would have come into their own as fans and writers by now. Yet nearly every update goes to the New Mutants cast (who are still a group of friends, and often still wear variants of the "X-Men Team Uniform".
The New Mutants had the 2000s DeFillipis revamp, the Wells run, the Krakoa one, etc. I've seen one Gen-X revamp but that's it. They both seem iffy on "graduating" to the next level- Cannonball leveled up early but he was the only one until Magik got her huge push semi-recently. Chamber & Husk joined an X-team but it was, uh, the Austen run.
The NM also seem to show up far more often, while Gen-X was largely written out. Skin & Synch were killed VERY early on (I guess Synch has returned in a bigger way). Penance vanished (the only other stuff she did was as a "Loner"). M was relegated to Peter David's "Book of Misfit Toys". Jubilee was a vampire for way longer than most characters ever get a "weird character shift" (and she was a MAJOR Marvel character for the '90s) and Husk fell into disuse (she was hugely minor in Wolverine and the X-Men). Chamber is the big exception, getting a lot of appearances here and there. Even Banshee died and mostly stayed away. Meanwhile, the NM kids get their own relaunches, Karma was in one of the mid-2000s X-books a lot, Cannonball joins the X-Men fairly often, he & Bobby were Avengers, Dani was doing Fearless Defenders stuff, etc.
What was Marvel's issue with Generation-X? Did it just not have as big a fandom as I thought it did? Did none of their fans ever get into comics and want to revamp them or push them? Was it just a "Claremont = Best" mentality (because some of his best work went into the New Mutants title)? It seems like the only real effect that book had on Marvel at all was making the White Queen a super-heroine.
