(Expect MAJOR spoilers from chapter 27 in the following recap, of course)
Previously on Zatch Bell 2, the villain standing in Momon's way introduced himself as a demon biologist named Moses, and explained his unusual method for tracking down any given intruder. By sensing irregularities in the air, and heightening his individual senses to determine the heat signatures of everyone in the vicinity, Moses managed to easily seek out Momon despite his best efforts to stay hidden. As Momon stalls long enough to lull Moses into a false sense of security, he shocks everyone by sneaking away from the hopeless situation by crawling through a secret passage disguised as a common air duct. Moses sounds the alarm to call for reinforcements, but it seems like Momon would have been able to escape by the skin of his teeth if that were his intention... We learn, however, that his destination was not the exit... It was the source of the magic emanating from Umagon's spell vial, deep in the heart of the fortress! As we get a good look at the horrific beast that effortlessly mows down the other Cards in the building, Momon makes a valiant last stand in a desperate attempt to take Umagon's spell vial and run off with it... but bites off more than he can chew, as the beast named "Libra" unleashes an unknown electrical attack on him that nearly leaves him down for the count. Barely hanging on, Momon imagines what it'd be like if he reclaimed Umagon's spells and delivered them to Sister Elle and Sunbeam, fantasizing about them being overcome with joy. This motivates him to push forward and fight through immense pain just long enough to grab Umagon's spell vial mere moments before it would've been absorbed by Libra, which would make it utterly unstoppable with the speed boost it would have gained from the Gou Shudoruku spell. Everything in Momon's mind was screaming at him to do the sensible thing and run away... but a feeling in his heart that he WILL see Elle again was all it took to make him do the insensible thing and keep resisting at all costs.
I think we can all agree that this was an outstanding chapter that emphasized Momon's exceptional character development. He tries to make amends for causing nothing but trouble for everyone when he was a kid, so we've learned that he's completely shifted gears and wants to do the opposite from now on... which is to bring people unsurpassed joy... But he's not out of the woods yet, since Libra is still alive and kicking. The fight is still ongoing, so let's see what we can discuss and get excited about until Friday arrives!
- It seems apparent that there's dissent among Beliel's ranks... If the inhabitants of the Elios stronghold are Cards, and Moses is a sorcerer... then to what end is he making Libra snuff out his comrades and steal their power? Why would Beliel be content with losing so many pawns when he even went out of his way to keep Bleu around after her evident betrayal?
- Momon created a map showing the locations of various spell magic that he's sensed throughout the time of the invasion, which revealed a plethora of different symbols for us to guess about. A content creator and fan named Ryuta-Kun took it upon himself to analyze them in depth, but the general consensus is that they mostly belong to the demons from 1,000 years ago. Especially the one at the top that is adorned with a bunch of star patterns, since that could only belong to Pamoon.
- Interestingly, that Libra monster isn't just powerful... it also seems to be skilled in battle as well. The ways that it decided to use its pilfered spells to combat the other Cards was very strategically sound (deflecting attacks, strafing with blasts, ensnaring, and then electrocuting). It seems to be some sort of experiment gone horribly wrong (perhaps the work of Moses, since he seems so unconcerned about it despite it going on the warpath and attacking everyone in the stronghold). How crafty do we think this creature could possibly be?
- Momon is surely going to need someone to bail him out of this mess now that he's sustained so much damage. Who are we thinking his potential savior might be? Could we be looking at a Momon and Tio reunion?
- Momon may have thwarted Libra's attempt to absorb Umagon's spell vial, but there are still 3 other spell vials left for it to appropriate. We know one of them contains Dalmos' spells (Ganzu Begiru & Amubegiru), but what about the other two? Who do we think they belong to? One of them shows an angel wing pattern and the other appears to just be a tight spiral of energy or maybe even fur...
- This is the first time we've ever seen lightning/electricity themed spells that didn't belong to the Bell family. Do you think they're actually spells pertaining to electricity that have nothing to do with Gash or Zeon, or do you think that these electric spells might be new ones that actually belonged to Zeon? Keep in mind, just because Zeon went to the Zielod enemy headquarters, that doesn't mean his spells weren't still stolen by Vesmirateo (who is presumed to have been that enormous, serpentine beast in the sky).
- It's all but confirmed at this point that Sunbeam and Elle are bound to make an appearance, but we said the same thing about Kid and wound up going in a completely different direction. Do we think the writing on the wall means Umagon and Sunbeam will reunite soon, as well as Sister and Momon... or could this be another bait and switch with a totally different demon team returning to the fold instead?
- In case you missed it, Raiku drew an amazing New Year's piece of artwork on Twitter, as he does every year! :D The previous year, he drew Momon in his 8-year-old form that we'd already come to know. But this time, he decided to draw Canchome... for the year of the snake. Could this mean we should be expecting to FINALLY catch up with Canchome, Folgore, Consomme, Zelie, Olmo, and Mippy after what has been over a year of inactivity from them? And if so, what could they be up to back in Japan?
- Moses seems so complacent about Libra... perhaps even confident. But seeing as how he's essentially a mad scientist, and Libra appears to be a mutated plant creature, do we think he might be done in by his own creation? What is there to suggest that this won't go down like something out of Frankenstein?
- If Umagon does return, could we be looking at a new spell for him? After all, unlike most of the cast, Umagon has a surprisingly short list so far with only FOUR spells to his name... If Umagon's main theme is speed... but then it mysteriously alternated with fire... one has to wonder if maybe a possible new spell for him might involve a different element once again. Thoughts?
