Typically, family businesses are long-term enterprises built on shared values, whereas nepotism becomes favoritism at the expense of merit. Mostly, employees prefer family leadership if their competence is proven. But timing is also important. If a business is built without experience, it can only damage credibility. A well-structured business establishes clear roles, expectations, and accountability. If a family member wouldn't be hired as an outsider, they probably shouldn't be hired at all.

This explanation makes sense. But does it imply that a business cannot become a family business until after it has become long term - has been around for “x” years ? And an employee who is family might be perceived as a nepo especially in those preliminary years, but particularly until they’ve proven their ability?

No… I’m proud of my company, which employs both male and female engineers and other professionals. However I’m fully aware that gender bias continues to exist in the industry (engineering and construction). If my company was an isolated bubble, it would be great, but we work with clients, contractors, colleagues, the public - that is where gender bias is prevalent.
