I guess a trailing question to this whole situation is why did I instinctually feel I needed to ask a question to confirm that is in fact what he wanted?

I dated someone who questioned me similarly and it drove me nuts. I eventually found out that he would often not be straightforward with what he wants (because of people-pleasing tendencies) and so he assumed other people may be acting similarly, so by further questioning me he was trying to give me the opportunity to actually express what I wanted (not realizing I had already done that in the first place). Could there be anything similar going on for you?
